Teeth Whitening Q & A

Why are my teeth discolored?

Tooth enamel is not a solid surface. Instead, it’s porous, which allows it to hold stains from dark-colored food and beverages. Other common reasons teeth become yellow include:

  • Poor dental hygiene practices
  • Certain prescription medications
  • Excessive fluoride consumption in your water or supplements
  • Smoking
  • Drinking dark beverages such as red wine, cola, and coffee
  • Eating dark-colored fruits like blueberries and blackberries

The natural aging process also causes thinner tooth enamel, which allows the darker colored center of the tooth to show through. Teeth whitening services can brighten and lighten teeth regardless of the reason for discoloration.

Can I get my teeth whitened?

If you’re over 16 years old, you may be a candidate for teeth whitening. Smiles Dental Spa will determine whether you’re eligible for teeth whitening services during an exam. You’re likely not a candidate for teeth whitening if any of the following situations apply:

Swollen or unhealthy gums

You can only get your teeth whitened if your mouth, gums, and supporting tissues are healthy. The good news is, if you restore the health of your gums, you may be a candidate for teeth whitening.

Excessive dental fillings

Dental fillings do not respond to teeth whitening gel like natural teeth do. If you have multiple fillings, especially ones that are visible, you’re not a candidate for teeth whitening unless you also replace your dental fillings after whitening to match the color.

Sensitive teeth

Teeth whitening uses hydrogen peroxide which can cause discomfort for those with sensitive teeth. If using a toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth lowers treats it, you may become a candidate for teeth whitening at a later date.

Teeth whitening is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women.

What is the tooth whitening process?

If you schedule an appointment for in-office teeth whitening, you first receive a professional dental cleaning and complete dental exam. You may receive X-rays to help your dentist determine if you can safely have your teeth whitened.

If the Smiles Dental Spa team determines you’re a candidate for teeth whitening, a plastic tray is placed in the mouth to protect your gums and lips. Then, a tooth whitening gel is applied to your teeth and special lights are used to penetrate deep into your teeth to break up stains.

Teeth whitening takes about an hour, and you’ll leave the office with brighter, whiter teeth and an amazing smile you’ll be happy to share!

If you prefer a take-home whitening kit, a mold is taken of your teeth to create two thin, flexible plastic mouth trays to fit your top and bottom teeth. You’ll fill the trays with the provided teeth whitening gel and wear for about an hour at a time. It may take several sessions over a few weeks to achieve your desired level of whiteness.
